Chris; if I understand your description, I think the "rag rug" look 
is produced by misaligned bi-directional sweeps of the head. If you 
have 'Hi speed' turned on, turn it off. If you don't, then I for one 
have no answer- it is an alignment, and you can't usually fix it 
yourself.
