No, I'm using the "regular" black that comes with the VM-S set.  I don't
know if it's a widespread problem, but it is for me.  I suspect it would not
be a problem for someone who prints every day.  In fact, MIS instructions
are very specific that the printer needs to be used continually.  Sometimes
I will have to let it sit for a few days (I have to go photograph sometime),
and that's when the trouble starts.  I can always recover the color nozzles,
but more often than not the black cartridge is dead and doesn't respond to
cures such as purging the foam.  According to MIS, the carbon (black) will
build up or settle in the cartridge in that case.  Anyway, it's easily cured
by using their pre-filled black position if it becomes a problem for you.
I'm very happy with the overall results and don't mind a little extra cost.
