myer rod

I am new to the digital fine arts process and would appreciate a link or definition of the " Meyer Rod and related coatings.I presume these coatings on archival papers, inks must have the primary purpose of physical protection against scratches etc?
Do these coatings diminish the tonal quality or dull the brilliance of prints after application.
Thanks,
Alan Zimmerman

Doesn't sound any different from several of the commercial sign coating
products that have been available for some time. The problem is multiple
coats and trying to get even flow. Hydrocote with a Mayer rod will still
give a better final print, requiring less time and less money.
