2200 UC/UT QTR Hybrid Profiles

2003-08-19 by Carl Schofield

I received a set of the MIS UT inks in 2200 carts yesterday. The ink
positions are K - Photo Black, LK - Eboni Matte Black, C - 75% K, LC -
50% K, Y - 25% K, M - blue toner, and LM - sepia toner. I haven't
loaded the entire inkset yet - just the Y position light gray and the M
position blue toner. I made four "hybrid" profiles (warm, "toned",
cool and extra cool) with QTR 2.0 using only the UC MK and LK inks
plus the two UT inks for printing on EEM. The "toned" profile is close
to neutral, but the warm and xcool profiles can also be blended to get
a neutral print. The "cool" profile produces more of a cool-neutral
print. Tonal transitions are smooth and there are no dots visible in
the highlights. I also made a couple of purge profiles for the M and Y
positions to aid in clearing the UC magenta and yellow inks after
loading the UT inks in those positions. I printed a target file with
black strips and a gray wedge at the bottom with these profiles. I
think this is a better way to purge when changing inks rather than
running cleaning cycles because you only have one ink channel firing
with each profile and it conserves the other inks. It took about three
prints to clear the yellow ink out and only one for the magenta. At
this point I haven't made enough prints to know if I'll need the
additional UT medium gray ink, but I may eventually try the whole set
when I don't have any color work left to do. The additional options
available with the two toners loaded is quite appealing, as Daniel has
already demonstrated with his 2100. I originally intended to use the
UC LC and LM for toning, instead of the UT blue toner, but I would have
to get some help from Roy with modifications to the UC_NEUTRALIZER
function to make that work because of the additional light gray ink in
the mix. If anyone else wants to play with these inks in their 2200,
the QTR profiles and linearization data are available at my filesharing
site in the UT.sit archive in the QuadtoneRIP 2.0 folder:
