I have no doubt in what you are saying, but I'm not sure I know the cause in
your case.

For scanning what?  Do you shoot a lot of slides?

BTW, those numbers sound like manufacturers claims, and NOT actual tested
numbers...and you should understand that most manufacturers simply state the
bit depth of the A/D converter as the dMax, and it is not.

I've heard of people returning refurb units (not Polaroid SS4ks though) many
times before getting a good one...so, though I agree with you %100 in
principle, in practice I think it's not always the case.
