I'm just finishing up Joel Eisinger's "Trace and Transformation" I like the book for its attention to the written criticism surrounding the development of photography and have found it to be a good companion to Hallmark's "American Photography: From Dryplate to Digital" by Keith F. Davis. Together they really cover what can be shown and what has been said. The issues the propel and infuriate the participants of various eras and therefore our own antecedents. Since there is occasional debate as to "what is" or the 'purpose of' I think these two books make a nice foundation for coming to an understanding of those questions for oneself.
