don there isn't a FAQ that i know of but here is a couple o' pointers MIS-one of major players in 3rd party ink development for b&w printing. Piezotone would be another. Sundance is another, and Lyson is another. On this forum you will find lots of MIS ink users and a good amount of Piezo ink users. Sundance has a new system that is still being explored and Lyson probably brings up the rear. UT-ultratone. this is the newest pigment based ink from MIS and primarily developed by list guru, Paul Roark. very stable ink. variable tones from wrm to cool with this inkset. VM-this is an older variable tone ink from MIS. still available, but most people are converting to UT. RIP-raster image processor. a RIP basically chews up all you image info and spits it back out to a printer so it can print. there are many kinds of RIPs out there and many opinions on which ones do this or that better. RIPs are essential for printing from vector based programs, such as Illustrator or Freehand. QTR-quadtone RIP, a black and white print driver developed for free for Mac OSX and Linux by Roy Harrington another active list member. Its an exiting development in b&w printing. It is an addendum to GIMP-PRINT a free unix based printer driver. IJC/OPM-Ink jet control/open print maker. pretty much the same concept as QTR for Mac system 9. Its a little prettier to look at than QTR. apparently its being upgraded for OSX, I think I read that its in beta now. OPM the actual printing part of the suite is free, IJC is $200 but allows one to profile any ink/paper combo. QTR does this too, it just takes some thought and time to dig in and do it. IP/IP5-Imageprint. this is a RIP with a solid crew of supporters that prints color and b&w. Its primary appeal to b&w printers comes from the Epson 2200/7600/9600 camp who want to use the Epson Ultrachrome inks to print b&w prints which do not suffer from metamerism. Metamerism is the evil beast that does not allow on to print acceptable b&w "out of the box" with Epson Ultrachrome printers. Basically metamerism is when the colors of a print shift under different lighting sources. For example a typical black and white print from a 2200 will look neutral or magentaish under tungtsten light, blueish under daylight, and greenish under fluorescent light. Its not subtle, its bad and unacceptable. IP,QTR,OP are among the many solutions around this problem. IP differs in that it also prints color and it costs $500. Okay there is a quick and dirty on the lingo. right on john e --- Don <elixirs4me@...> wrote: > Been enjoying this list for the past few weeks.
