This happens if there's a partial clog or a bit of fuzz on the head. It's possible to clean the head surface by putting a little ammoniated window cleaner on a strip of cloth or paper towel, taping it down under where the print head goes, and then sliding the print head back and forth over it. This works for many people using stock Epson inks, but I can't vouch for the compatibility of any cleaner with 3rd party inks.
