Re: DYI 1160 Head Replacement

2004-01-04 by jim hayes

Some years ago I too bought the manual, but Epson absolutely refused
to sell me the two floppies that only run on Win98 to do the aligning.

Then I begged and pleaded with a local Epson repair center, who had a
copy of the software, to let me beg buy borrow or steal the software.
Although they were very nice about, they refused.

This was at a time when the 1160 was still under Epson warranty, but
if you had a problem, Epson sent you frightful messes as "refurbised"
replacements through the mail. I got one that not only made growling
noises, but looked liked it was growing fur on the inside.

The service center could have just swapped heads on my clean printer
under warranty right? Nope. Epson demanded they send it in for a
"swap". The 1160 was on their list of forbidden printers to do
warranty work on. The only way I could have gotton the head change was
to pay someone to do it (aka the service center, drop any idea of
warranty).

Rant off.

I am surprised and gladdened to see that you can now obtain a copy of
the software. I wasn't the only one refused the software, so many
people that could have tried it didn't. It did seem quite a doable
procedure, as long as you use Win98 and a parallel port.

Good luck, would be nice to hear how it worked out for you. As I no
longer own 1160's the software wouldn't do me much good now.
