Gimp has a number of short comings but is generally a usable photo editor. The problem has been that one can not print with QTR directly from it. I am in the process of trying a windows emulator called Cross Over Office that allows Photoshop, amongst a number of other core windows programs, to run in Linux. So far the editing part works just fine. It is possible to print from Photoshop using a QTR defined printer but the controls are largely lacking. They can be set externally from Webmin. On the other hand it is actually no more difficult to bring up a second window, which is a snap in Linux, and print from a command line using either David Wroblewski's qpr or a variant of it. Vuescan has a Linux version which should take care of the scanning problems. The bottom line is that with very little kludging Linux is a more than viable way to go for B&W rip printing with a machine designed for windows. A dual boot set up would be good as would a single purpose Linux box. Not quite as elegant as a Mac for QTR but if you are a windows person and don't want to change platforms or spend a lot of money it is a more than reasonable alternative.
