Epson 9600, Eboni black: black only and full color?

2004-02-26 by chipcarterdc

While waiting to make a decision on wide format B&W, I'm finding that, given
the amount of prints I've been lucky enough to sell recently, I need to
purchase a wide-format printer now. I think I've settled on the 9600. For color
output, I'll be more than happy w. a 9600 and the Epson or Atkinson profiles.
My question is this: what to do for B&W while I'm figuring out whether to go the
2 printer route (w. some B&W inkset in one) or the 9600+ imagePrint route? I
find the black-only prints on my 2200 using Eboni black to be acceptable --
still a bit warm, but good enough as a stop-gap til I get this all worked out.

So, (1) can I install the Eboni cart and still print in full color using the Epson/
Atkinson profiles? I would think not, given that the Eboni black is less warm
than the Epson black. (2) How well does Eboni black adhere to luster/glossy
surface papers? One real big hestitation w. getting a wide-fromat Epson is
the need to switch black inks and waste lots of $. If I can print w. the Eboni
black + OEM inks on both glossy and matte paper, even if I have to spray the
glossy prints with a fixative of some sort (which one?), I'd be happy. If not, I
guess I can switch to entirely matte surfaces, although I'd prefer not to.

Any guidance anyone can give would be appreciated. This is getting fairly
urgent, as I have 2 now people who each want several big prints, and a
potential business client who may want 5-10 big prints. I'm currently sending
big stuff out to West Coast Imaging, and while they're good, I'd rather keep the
profit margin for myself. (Of course, as soon as I buy a 9600, epson will
announce an upgrade....)

Thanks!
