<I've heard that a small amount of residual fix left in <the print actually helps preserve the print.  Is this <because it can act as a buffer?)

But, we know what happens to prints that are not thoroughly washed.  They yellow.  Is it that they have to be thoroughly washed, but not too thoroughly?
