RE: [Digital BW] Why doesn't MIS prefill CFS with photo black ink?

2004-03-17 by Paul Roark

Terry,

I think the most flexible setup that can print on either matte or glossy
paper without changing inks is the UT2 inkset with the Eboni matte black
installed. Short of a 4000, I think this is the only setup that can really
do this well.

It's true that Photo K can also print on both, but the dmax of the PK on
matte is very weak.

With Eboni in the black position, not only is the matte dmax is very good,
but with curves we also get a glossy dmax that is only down about 5% below
the Photo K dmax. With the glossy papers, this still gives an outstanding
black.

What you lose by leaving the Eboni installed is the ability to print glossy
paper without using Photoshop curves. The way the UT2 system prints on
glossy with Eboni is by using the dark grays together instead of the black.
To do this, special curves are needed. They pull the sepia ink out entirely
at the 100% point and have the magenta and cyan inks almost full on. By
using the two dark gray inks instead of the PK there is another advantage.
We can get a cooler black. In some cases this more than offsets the 5% loss
in dmax. Cool black looks deeper than warm black. (That is why Eboni often
looks darker than the Epson Matte black.)

So, bottom line, what I recommend is a UT2 CFS with Eboni installed. I
don't bother with PK at all any more.

Maybe I'm wrong in my thinking then. Is it the Photo Black that does
well with both matt and glossy and the Ebony that is only for the
glossy? I want the versitility of printing to both types of papers.
