It is a welcome relief from the pictures of hummingbirds, fish (no matter how caught), and other drivel (Point Lobos and Yosemite are a bit tired). BTW, I have lived in the third world, with the people, sharing their tenacious hold on life--fishing for food--fishing for tomorrow. Right, and whether it is art isn't a very important question either. However that " is it art ?" even " is it fine art ?" question is not reserved for Point Lobos landscapes either. To throw in a heavyweight; HCB showed compassion as well and it wasn't just for the pretty picture. The same for Bruce Davidson and that was done in the US. Wonder what the verdict would be on the " the steerage" if it was made today in a third world country. There's a link on www.dpreview.com to an interesting article how Sports Illustrated covers the Super Bowl these days with digital cameras. It is impressive in its organisation and speed. 16.000 takes judged and 80 selected for further judgment. 12 photographers. Like " give 1000 chimps a typewriter ... ". That's really at the other end of the spectrum. One would think that one of the photographers mentioned in the thread could achieve more single handed. Call it " good photography " and it may be your taste or not but " snapshots " and " underdeveloped countries " have nothing to do with it. Ernst
