Taking a look at the programming manual from the epsondevelopers.com web site, it looks as if the gloss is controlled the same as any other ink at the driver level.  This means it is technically feasible to control the gloss independantly.  

I don't know if the Epson driver will allow you to do this (I doubt it).  I suspect you'll see it first in third party drivers and RIPs.  It should be fairly straightforward for gimp-print and (consequently) Roy Harrington's QuadToneRIP to support it.

I don't know how you'd control it though.  Maybe send two files through the driver/RIP?  the normal RGB or Grayscale file and a second "Gloss Mask" file?
