I picked up the Epson 1640xl on e-bay for 1200.00 NIB. 
I had to go to retail to get the transparency adapter, but sounds like you 
don't need it.
I have only scanned large film 10x12 and a few drawings, I really like it but 
would not pay 2500.00. Software? the basic epson stuff is ok but not stellar.
I suspect you would be fine with either.
