4000 B&W feedback after 6 weeks heavy use (crossposted)

2004-06-08 by scrber

Thought you may find this interesting as I guess it is fairly
unique...
I have had my 4000 now for 6 weeks and it has received reasonably
heavy use, but ONLY for black and white. I have printed 110 A3+
prints for a book I am binding.
My main observation is on ink usage, or rather, lack of. I was
surprised to find that hardly any yellow ink has been used since the
original priming. It is almost at the same level as the PK, which I
know has not been used for anything other than head cleans as I have
only printed on matt so far. The light grey, light magenta and light
cyan have all received the heaviest use (and matt black is now out,
but I have also done a fair bit of BO so I can't count this on the
same scale). This usage would go some way to back-up the claims that
the new 4000 profiles use a lot of the Bill Atkinson (and perhaps IP)
learning that yellow is the main cause of the metamarism seen with UC
pigments. There is still metamarism (and I can't stand it) but I do
appreciate that it is much better than previous (non-IP) full color
printed images.
I still find the print quality superb, BO on textured or watercolour
paper is fantastic, and when printed big the slight masking of detail
that can be seen almost becomes an advantage (with my S2 pro files
anyway, they look soft and grainy at 8x10, fantastic at 16x20). full
color prints are neutral to my eyes and my UT2 printers have not been
turned on in 5 weeks.

regards
Steve
