Tell him to unplug and replug all the USB cables, even the ones that don't appear to be part of the problem. Why? The act of unplugging/replugging will "clean" the connections a bit, probably enough to let it run again. Easy and cheap first step to take. IMHO, 90% of problems like these come down to connector problems.
