Hello Clayton, Mark,
usefull suggestions,thanks,  yes have tried changed res, changed 
exposure, even fiddled with the focus, nothing really helps.
Its not the grain - which in  the negative is invisible under a 7x 
loupe - I guess I have to take the shots in future w/o any sky. 
Useful exercise.
