Museo

2001-08-08 by Julian Thomas

Sorry for the cross posting but it seems relevent...
I've just got hold of a small pack of museo and I thought I'd share some
initial impressions. I'm printing on an 1160, piezo CIS, lever in the down
position. I was looking for a paper to print portfolio prints on. My usual
WR/WT being too textured IMO for the kind of viewing distance typical of
portfolio prints. I've only printed a couple of images, and I've only used
the concord rag profile as advised by Crane.
This is a very smooth sheet. Smoother than Torchon (thanks Tim, arrived
today!). It is a good weight with a suitable 'fine art' feel. Mid tones and
high lights are superb. I've just finished printing my Print exchange image
which is almost totally about shades of grey with little blacks, and the
image is superior IMO to WT/WR, where the texture gets in the way of small
details. The downside is that the blacks have less impact than WT/WR and on
one of the images I printed gave the impression of being less focussed.
In conclusion, I'll certainly use it for the portfolio. It is a good paper
and under the loupe hides the dither pattern better than WT/WR. I'll try
experimenting with different profiles. WR/WT remains my paper of choice for
framed exhibition prints. I have an exhibition in October and I'll print on
WR/WT. I'm hoping that the new Hahnemuhle has a similar feel but with better
blacks than Museo.
