George, A modern dedicated B&W inkset will give smoother and more lighfast results than the Epson Archival black ink. Compared to MIS Eboni black, PiezoTone Museum black, and Epson UltraChrome black, the Epson Archival black is not very archival according to my fade testing. There has been significant progress since that inkset was made. I'll be taking a shot at putting a monotone MIS FS (warm) or FSN (neutral-cool) inkset on a 2000p as early as next week. I'll let people know how it goes. If there is enough demand and the printer works well with that, I may see how the MIS Ultra Tone 2 or 7 (variable tone inkset for the 1280 and 2200, respectively) do on the 2000p. Being that it is an old and very slow printer, I'm just not sure how many would be interested. On the other hand, if there are lots of them sitting around, it might be a very affordable way to get into digital B&W printing. I have just begun to scan and print some of my thousands of bxw negitives and make digital prints. I am using a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 and printing on a Epson 2000P in BO mode on Epson papers with Epson ink. I have been able to get some pretty good results but I would welcome any advice, suggestions or criticism that any one can offer to improve the quality.
