By using repeaters you can extend Firewire, in 10 meter sections, to 
well over
75 meters.  It does take high end cables, see 
http://www.granitedigital.com/
and the repeaters can be had for under $100 each.  This is with no loss
in speed.
If you are going to run cable why not ethernet?
