Jon, >I'm thinking about ... switching over my Epson 7000 printer to >the MIS FSN ink set and driving it with QTR. I can't speak to QTR, but as to inksets, I recommend using the newer UT-FSN, not the old FSN. While that was the first non-warming inkset, it is not as lightfast as the UT version. The old FS inksets had a hextone ink order that used more light inks. The ink order that works very well in the hextone printers I've recently set up is to use dark gray midtone in both C & M positions, medium gray in the LC & LM positions, and the light gray in the Y position. The newer desktop hextone printers then do well with only a grayscale curve. With the 7000 you might want to do some mild partitioning, but the medium gray is not very dark, so it can probably be tolerated very high up in the highlights -- may be all the way up. Another benefit of the CMCMY ink order and UT-FSN is that the 2 dark gray inks can generate a good dmax on glossy papers, and the UT midtones are glossy compatible. So, you'd be able to print on glossy paper as well as matte paper without changing black ink. Good luck. Paul www.PaulRoark.com
