I can see good reasons for more then 16.7MP, at the sensor anyway, suppose you could build a 50.1MP sensor, you eliminate the need for bayer patterns, you could use a triad (triangle of pixels), as the sensor resultion expands beyond this point you can use over-sampling, where several triads are combined into a single file resolution pixel.
