7500, etc. UT setup

2004-12-14 by Paul Roark

I thought I'd give an update on the UT inkset I'm running in my 7500. It is
basically a modified UT-FSN with the ability to print on matte of glossy
paper and the ability to vary the tone slightly to better profile the papers
and print medium warm matte prints.

The ink order that works very well is:

    K = Eboni

    M = MIS PK (This gives a really good glossy dmax when combined with the
FSN-C

    LM = UT2-LM (This allows the excessive coolness is some matte shadows to
be controlled.

                It also allows good medium warm printing on many matte
papers.

    C = UT-FSN-C

    LC = A new UT-FSN ink with a density midway between Y and C.

    Y = UT-FSN-Y

The 7500 can print essentially dotless on many matte papers, for example
PhotoRag and PremierArt/UltraSmooth, and these papers really benefit from
the light warm ink's neutralizing the shadows.

On glossy paper, the printer did better with only the M & LM not used in the
midtones. With the C & M both firing the paper was being overloaded. So,
that allowed the use of those spots for other purposes. With the PK in
there, my glossy prints, when sprayed are holding dmaxs of close to 2.4.

One thing I've found is that the shape of the curves affects the bronzing.
I'm not completely sure why, but spreading the overlap of the Y and LC
minimized the bronzing on Costco paper, making the new Swiss version almost
as good as the old Epson Glossy Photo Paper, but with a better dmax.

I'm not sure if MIS will support this inkset. It is always a question of
demand. I think it'll work well on all the older large format printers -
7000. 7500. 9000, and 9500. The ability to print excellent, large matte and
glossy without changing the black inks is a really nice feature.

As usually, RGB curves are all that is needed to control the inkset.

Let me know if there is any interest in the inkset so I can convince MIS to
pre-mix the new FSN midtone ink for us.
