The 9000s have a native resolution of 360. The 9600s have a 
native resolution of 720 max in some settings. The 9600 has a 
smaller minimum droplet size and droplet size variation so there 
is a hardware difference that could be the cause.

That might well be the case and the cause, but how is it that this condition
has not yet been reported by others - many others with the same piece of
equipment.
