Do you happen to recall _how_ low the
problem cartridges were when they caused this strange behavior? I
guess this response to a low level could be caused by defective
cartridge chips(?)

Sorry but I don't know how low it was. I do know that it wasn't low enough
to cause the warning light to flash.

That's a strange one! As we know (or think we know), when the ink
level is perceived as too "low", a cartridge chip is expected to (a)
cause the ink warning light to flash, and/or (b) prohibit any
further printing activity. Do you happen to recall _how_ low the
problem cartridges were when they caused this strange behavior? I
guess this response to a low level could be caused by defective
cartridge chips(?)
