If you're starting with color images, as from a digicam, then it's important
to know something about the color manipulation tools, because it's important
to learn how to exploit the color for getting the best detail and contrast
in the B&W conversion. However, there are some things, like really brutal
curve adjustments, that work wonders on B&W images but that would be
disastrous in color. So there is certainly room for someone to write at
least a long article, if not a short book, on using PS specifically for B&W.
Until someone does, the archives of this list are probably one of the best
resources, even if painful to search.
