It's actually a separate piece of plastic that has been modified.  The chip
re-setter comes with the accessory that allows it to fit various carts.

No, the 1280 black cart fits the re-setter without the use of the accessory
at all. The 1280 color cart doesn't fit no matter what you do.  (Well, some
modification may work but ...)  So, I reset those chips by putting them on
the 1280 black cart first for resetting.

I'm not a fan of 1280 filling.  I do it all the time, but bottom filling
bypasses the filter that protects the heads, and there have been a couple
batches of carts over that last year that have had one color or the other
just not feed right.  You'll know if one color goes blank.  Hopefully MIS
has procured better carts now.
