Roy- Yes, the 16-bit to 8-bit conversion is worth exploring (I'll see if I can get to that sometime soon). There are so many factors involved in the transformation of file information into ink on paper (John Lodge pointed out some of these in an earlier post) that, at this point, I'm inclined to think that the subtle differences we're talking about may be the product of the profiles, as much as anything else.
