I think the Epson 3000 is an excellent machine for the money. I've used one 
with the Piezography system with excellent results.

Paper feed can be a bit of a problem, especially with heavy stock. If you can 
avoid the thicker papers, I don't think you'll have too much trouble. I 
wouldn't use one for black ink only printing, but from your post it doesn't sound 
like you're interested in that.

If you can find a good used machine it can make an excellent dedicated 
quadtone printer. It wouldn't be my first choice for color.
