QTR and HPR settings

2005-02-06 by m_r_tomlinson

I just got an epson 2100 and downloaded Quadtone RIP with the GUI, but
am a little confused about what settings will give the best results.
Searching the archives helped a little, but I still have some
questions. I am using windows XP and epson UC inks on Hahnemuehle
photo rag. I am also using the Gray Lab space and soft proofing -
saving the tiff file with the gray lab matte profile embedded.

I get nice fairly neutral results with a 50-50 blend of
UC_PremierFineArt warm and cool curves, but what dither algorithm will
give the smoothest tones? I have tried 'ordered' and 'fast'. Should I
be using 'eventoned'? What is 'Floyd Steinberg'? etc...

I am setting the paper to 'Matte' which I assume is correct and
resolution to 1440 super (I don't know what the difference between
'1440 super' and '1440 dpi' is). I tried 2880, but the program then
crashes.

The prints are OK, but not quite as good as I was getting on a 1290
with UT2/Roark curves. Less smooth tones and a little grainier. So is
this because it is not possible to get similar results to a monochrome
inkset with QTR/UC? Or are there
better settings for UC ink that I am missing? Or will there
be a true HPR profile available at some point that will be an
improvement?

Another question relates to the black ink. The printer only comes with
a photo black cart. I assume that if I get a matte black cart it will
improve the results on HPR.

Thanks for any help. Hopefully it will save me a lot of time/money on
paper ;-)
