There are going to be more of these water-borne coatings. They avoid the problems of solvents. I gave up on Hydrocote, which was the coating I preferred for a while. There were a number of reasons for my stopping the experiments, however, including, application difficulties, inability to scale up the rod application, lack attractive small volume application options, longevity uncertainty, lack of soaking in to the substrate which included poor adhesion, less effective UV blocking of water-borne v. solvent based coatings, and those are just the reasons that come to mind now. On the plus side, if I had a good HVLP sprayer and wanted to mess with it, the finish can be very nice on rag papers.
