Printing B&W at on-line retailers

2005-02-11 by Ortt, John (UK)

Hi Everyone,

There is a lot of discussion about printing B&W specifically using BO printers, but does anyone ever use online printer such as Photobox for their B&W prints.

I am asking as I cannot realistically aford a new printer, I have an Epson All-in-one which does a great job (but is far from professional) and there is no way I could afford a better printer at the mo.....which leaves me with proffesionnal printers for the occasionnal good photo I want developed.

I have in the past used Photobox for a number of my colour prints ranging from 6x4 right up to A3 posters and have always been delighted with the quality they achieve. My humble inkjet could not come near.

I have also used Boots on the highstreet (in England) a number of times as they periodically have a 50 prints for 5 offer on which I think would be hard to match both in convienience, quality and cost.

I suppose the questions I am asking are:
How would a professional Photograph printer/developer handle pure B&W photography?
Do they use separate machines or can they use the same ones as they do for the colour prints?
How do the resulting prints compare with a top class Multi-tone B&W home/semi-pro inkjet?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, any replies will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

John
