Adrian,
  Sorry if this is too obvious a question, but are you
printing from PhotoShop 5.5 or 6.0?  
  I ask only because when I first set up MIS VM inks
on my 1280(w/ PS5.5), the prints showed a lot of tonal
separation and were lacking very much in contrast.  
  I then installed PS6.0 and voil\ufffd!  BIG difference. 
Prints were much beter and more what I was expecting. 

  Of course, this is my experience with the 1280
curves on a PC.  Don't know about the 1160 or what
platform your on.
