Frank: Nice diplomatic response; however, I believe "dumb" is a rather rude way to refer to a traditional technique or its practitioners, and it does indeed show a lack of sophistication. Regarding signed mats, again, if that's dumb, then someone needs to take it up with the masters. (I won't burden you with a litany of famous photographers who have chosen the convention of signing their front mat. You sign your mats, and, trust me, you are therefore in good company. Whether there's room for experimentation in the middle of this digital paradigm shift is an entirely different discussion. However, trust me, as a photographer, you can't go wrong signing the front mat. (And yes, with a pencil.) Regards, Peter G.
