Re: [Digital BW] For Steadman/To Piezo or Not to Piezo...that is a question.

John in OK,

Maris just answered the questions well. I got the Spyder from Inkjetmall.com. Good price.

Piezo is not too expensive if you consider the alternative (pro lab and custom fiber prints) but it does get addictive...in the first few months I spent over a $1,000 on paper alone. My advice is just buy a few sample packs of papers from Inkjetmall or photoinkjet.com or digitalartsupplies.com. Try the papers to find a few you like. Then buy 11x17 sheets and cut in half for smaller prints. That is an easy way to start.

I don't use OEM inks except to test the printer.

Good Luck,
Steadman

Monitor Spyder with PhotoCal or OptiCal from Colorvision to profile the monitor - this is the most important calibration step.

Take you pick of printer profiling programs - if you get PhotoCal or OptiCal you may want to buy one of their packages which include printer profiling software.

OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer - i.e. Epson as you surmised.

  Good luck!

  | Good Morning Steadman,
  |
  | If you are in the USA, have a happy Thanksgiving, if not, have a great
  | weekend.
  |
  | After Christmas I will have the time to start experimenting with the digital
  | B & W process.
  |
  | For photoshop6.1 only, I am using a dual Mac G-4 with one gig of ram,
  | Polaroid SS4000 film scanner, Microtek Scanmaster 4 flatbed, Yamaha CD
  | burner, Wacom tablet and an Epson 1270 for a printer using their inks. I use
  | Hasselblad for work and a Nikon F5 plus an 8008s for vacations.
  |
  | Would you have a ball park figure as to what you think it would cost to set
  | up a system for making the Piezo prints?
  |
  | As you can see I do not have a system to calibrate the above and I get the
  | impression that this would be important to do. What equipment do you
  | recommend? I want to keep using the 1270 for Epson Inks.
  |
  | I have been following, or that is trying to follow this list for some time
  | and I am still confused about a lot of things. For instance, as a simple
  | question, I still haven't figured out what OEM actually means. I guess it is
  | the actual inks from Epson.
  |
  | Thanks,
  |
  | John in OKC
