Hi Paul, welcome to the group. Until others jump in with more specific answers, here are some general overviews on the subject: A- The 1280 seems a fine choice for what you are doing. Putting inks other than OEM is not without problems, but for bw printing there is no better way to go than 6-tone gray/black inks. Absolutely count on a CIS. Worth every penny! B- The choice of going with Jon Cone's piezo vs alternative inks boils down to how much tinkering and trial-and-error you want to do on your own vs cost. I have only used piezo on an 1160 and remain a happy user a year later, but there are a lot of people happy with MIS and other inks. For someone "getting started", I would recommend the piezo solution (from inkjetmall.com) because it's plug-and-play and there is very decent tech support behind it. Opinions vary on this and you are also advised to form your own based on the experience of others here. C- Down the line, you are likely to get into debates on ink color (how "neutral" is neutral gray) and paper (color, texture, weight, deepest black attainable). Take a look at our Files section. Lots of info and links to help you.
