Yeah, I guess the results will vary a lot from scanner to scanner. Roy 
said that the Epson 3200 gave results close to what he got from his 
densitometer. I have the same scanner and think the results aren't too bad.

Why don't you just play around with GRAY_GAMMA, GRAY_HIGHLIGHT, and 
GRAY_SHADOW in the meantime? You can create really good curves even 
without linearization. It just takes a little more experimentation and 
tweaking.
