I'm just picking up this thread part way through. Are you just using
black/lt black inks for the negs?

The best digital negs I've seen were made using the colour inks - a nice
emerald green on pt/pd for example (red seems to give too grainy/artefacty
negs)

Have you tried the PDN curve setup system?

There is a lot of good discussion on digital negs over on the APUG list(of
all places!)

I recall a recent thread on the 4000 where just increasing the ink setting
(in the printer) +10 or 15% sorted out some density problems
