Digital BW, The Print

I am considering buying the Epson r1800.  I am interested in printing 
black and white and black and white tinted fine art prints with 
occasional color printing.  Is this a good printer for BW fine art 
prints?  Do I need a RIP with it?  What is recommended?  Is this a 
replacement for the epson 2200?  I'm afraid that as soon as I buy an 
r1800 there will be an announcement for a spectular epson 2200 
replacement.

Any help, guidance, suggestions would be appreciated!
