Paul That condition appears to be quite common with Sigma lenses. I believe some other third party manufacturers (such as Tamron) license technology from Canon to make their compatible lenses and it may not happen with those lenses. I think Sigma must reverse engineer Canon cameras to design their Canon lens interfaces. For newer Sigma lenses (I don't have any and haven't done this personally) I understand that they can be returned to Sigma for a firmware upgrade which can make them compatible with newer cameras. So, it's not really Canon's choice in the matter. I guess they could charge less for the lens interface technology.
