I think that if I were in your shoes, I'd buy one of the 20+ inch WUXGA
(1920x1200) LCDs from Viewsonic or Samsung. I haven't tried them personally,
but they're in that price range, have high resolution (albeit not quite as
high as a CRT), are perfectly sharp compared to a CRT, and can be turned
vertically on the fly for seeing vertical images in high res. Then, I'd get
a smaller LCD for a second monitor to put the tools on.
