Peter, The UT inks are the replacement for the VM inks. I made some UT curves for the 1160 also. In general, I think the UT inks show a bit more dot that the VM because the warm gray is warmer -- pure carbon (what the VM warm gray would fade to after a while). If you want variable tone, however, the UT is it. If you mostly do the same tones and they are within the range of the UT-FS or FSN, then those monotone inksets will print a bit smoother on the 1160. I have also made some curves for them, and they are much easier to make new curves for if and when you want. I would replace the old carts with new ones. That is, don't mix the inks.
