They always take a bit more the first time, to fill the sponge.

Yes, just a little bit at the top.  1/4" I think is too much, I leave
about 1/8".  Also is important to not let the tank go completely dry
(so it doesn't form a bubble at the juncture between sides).  Be sure
to swap before it shows empty on the indicator.
