Film Scanning - RAW file output?

2005-05-26 by Randy Rancier

I use Vuescan for scanning negitives. I have been outputting my B&W
film files in TIFF format, 16-bit depth. Is there any advantage to
outputting in RAW format over what I can get using the 16-bit TIFF
files. In the future I will probably doing about 25 percent of my
work in color, using 48-bit, and the rest with B&W film.

I understand the advantages of working with RAW cature when using
digital cameras, and I was wondering if there is any advantages when
scanning film to going RAW! If going RAW, what should I use to
convert the files from RAW to TIFF format since I don't use
Photoshop? I use Picture Window which handles 16-bits per channel.

Thanks,
Randy
