I'm in the same situation, Mike. But I am not tempted by the iMac,
although not because I think its LCD would not serve as well a CRT.

In fact, I'm considering a combining a new (to me) G5 with a 17-inch
Dell/Samsung CRT Photoshop "palette" monitor (at 1024 x 768 & 85Hz)
and a 19" EIZO LCD image display which pivots. At 1280 x 1024 (or
1024 x 1280) a 19-inch LCD has an active display size of 376 x 301 mm
/ 14.8 x 11.9 inches. That would let me see full-size, whether it's
oriented horizontally or vertically, the largest image I can
comfortably mat and frame (at 16 x 20) in my small quarters.

I _am_ tempted to use a 15" or 17" G4 PowerBook, instead of a G5
PowerMac, with a 19" EIZO LCD which pivots. I'm afraid a notebook
might be too much slower due to its having slower processors (both
CPU & GPU) and hard drives as well as less RAM. But I'm still
tempted, because it would be so nice to have the PowerBook as a
traveling companion for a digital camera, if I can ever decide which
one to buy. And in any case, nice to have the notebook to use as for
navigating via GPS on my road (and off-road) trips in the Southwest.

Incidentally, it is easy to find a WinTel notebook with faster
processors and hard drives. But not, as far as I can tell, with more
RAM than a PowerBook. And without that gain too, I'm reluctant to
consider giving up the Mac OS for Windows. Otherwise, I think it
might be a good time to switch.

In any case, I think it might be a good time to move from CRTs to
LCDs, at home as well as abroad, for images, especially if you like
to see portrait, as well as landscape photographs, in one relatively
large piece.
