From a very basic level, it would make sense to ensure maximum ink coverage throughout the scale and that would imply running the lighter inks further up the scale (then you get your 'mid-tone' density through more ink rather than less). Whether from a practical point of view it makes a difference I don't know. But if people see benefit in more than 3 greys then this would imply that there is benefit in at least using 3 fully.
