RE: [Digital BW] Evolution RIP

2005-07-21 by John Moody

Thanks for the suggestions to consider. After a good nights sleep, I have
come to my senses.
Being the only customer for a RIP print driver would be bad for both seller
and user. What was I thinking?
What I was trying to do with the RIP and the 2200 is like showing up with a
knife to a gunfight. Tyler was right about the difference in control
available between a 2200 and 4000, glad he pointed that out.

I do own QTR and use it with OEM inks for BW. Aided with the fantastic
grayscale icc tool, I’m also trying out BO with pleasing results. Problem
is, I also print color, and that is what I was testing the RIP for.
Eventually I consider having a new printer for color, and putting a
dedicated BW inkset in the 2200. If it were not for the ink switching on
the 4800, that would be the only printer I need. I’ll have to wait for a
“4900” to come out.

I did explain to Steve that I planned to eventually move the RIP license
from my 2200 to a 17” new model Epson at no cost, and he agreed to that,
FWIW. Moot point now though…

John

That curve was just a random design to illustrate what can be done.

If you are really only going to be using a dedicated inkset for B/W,
then it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy anything other than QTR or
maybe IJC/OPM. If you wanted to go into a "normal" CMYK (4K+CMY)
process for toning images with color profiles in Photoshop, then you
will of course need a full color RIP.What you buy nw, may need an
upgrade to work with the next Epson printers, and you can almost bet
money that the upgrade will not be free. And if B/W is your primary
interest, the 4800 will do a 5K+CMY configuration if that's how you
want to run it.
