Measuring density

2005-08-10 by Chris Aitken

I have access here to a Gretag Macbeth TD932 (transmission densitometer),
and also a PerkinElmer Lambda 9 spectrophotometer.

I am aware that one is supposed to use a transmission densitometer for film,
and a reflection densitometer for paper. However, I have profiled some paper
using Martin Wesley's excel spreadsheet [1], and the results from the TD932.
The profiled 21step wedge looks much better (Ilford Classic Gloss, dMax =
1.57 (HP920C with OEM black)).

Is there a real issue with measuring paper via transmission (assuming the
paper base has a constant transmission)?

Regarding the spectro (a huge beast), I could measure the reflection by
cutting each of the steps out, and placing them on the reflection stage.
This would then give me the percentage reflection per step.
How does one then create a curve, knowing the nominal %K of the step, and
the measured reflection?

Thanks,

Chris
